Have you thought about seeking parenting support? If you asked your own parents or grandparents if they could have benefited from parenting advice, what do you think they would say? The way we parent and rear our children is molded by our own experiences, and sometimes we can benefit from a guiding hand to help us get through some parenting obstacles. What if we told you there was access to safe and effective strategies, advice, resources, and support in your own community?
About Northwest Area Families
Northwest NC Families connects families to trusted family support providers embedded within the community and to flexible online parenting resources. How do we do it? Through Triple P – The Positive Parenting Program! Triple P guides parents through simple and practical strategies to strengthen their family relationships. Parents can confidently navigate common behaviors to build solid, healthy relationships.
Connected parents raise healthy children
The goal of Northwest NC Families is to meet families and caregivers where they are to promote the understanding of child and adolescent development (and common childhood behaviors) and to encourage safe, stable, and nurturing relationships within family units and our communities. The Triple P Implementation Team connects Northwestern North Carolina families with parenting resources and trusted community partners. Community voices guide the work that we do.
Who we are
Northwest NC Families was conceived by the Appalachian District Health Departments’ Triple P Implementation Team to serve as a resource for families and Triple P providers in our 12-county region. Northwest NC Families serves Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties.
Triple P is funded by the NCDHHS’ Division of Public Health and Division of Social Services, and the implementation of Triple P in the Northwestern N.C. region is led by AppHealthCare. Supporting families through the Positive Parenting Program is a community effort. The success of the program is due to our partner agencies who are invested in the families and children within our community.

What is Triple P?
Triple P is an international, evidence-based parenting program that helps parents and caregivers develop the skills they need to build strong family relationships, manage misbehavior and prevent problems from happening in the first place.
Triple P is different from most parenting programs: it doesn’t tell you how to be a parent, rather it offers a selection of techniques and ideas to help manage behaviors before they occur and provide safe strategies when things don’t go as planned.
How does Triple P work?
A simple trick to improve positive thinking
At Northwest NC Families, we want to work with families to unlock a positive outlook in their parenting. According to social psychologist Alison Ledgerwood, our perception of the world leans towards the negative. Ledgerwood presents evidence that reframing how we communicate could be the key to unlocking a more positive outlook in her Ted Talk.
