Get to know our Triple P Providers: Hannah Mahala & Jeannie Parsons-Rhymer, with The Children’s Council

Recently Northwest NC Families had the pleasure of speaking with two of The Children’s Council staff and Triple P providers, Hannah Mahala and Jeannie Parsons-Rhymer. They gave us the inside scoop on all that is involved in delivering Triple P to their community as well as how they support families through the program and what they hope to encourage in others.

As for a little background on The Children’s Council. Let’s dive in. Established in 1977, the Children’s Council of Watauga County, Inc. is a local nonprofit that works to build a strong foundation for children’s learning and development by strengthening families, the early childhood system, and the wider community. All of the programs, from prenatal to age 12, concentrate on child development to prepare children to be ready to succeed in school. Through family support, early literacy programs, child care technical assistance & professional development, and community outreach & collaboration we focus on the importance of each child. We are committed to our vision of a community where every child has the support to live a healthy, happy life.

Triple P Providers Interview: Hannah Mahala & Jeannie Parsons-Rhymer, with The Children’s Council

Triple P Providers in Watauga County

Hi ladies. We’re so glad you were able to meet with us. First, we’d love to start with the basics. What drew you to this position?

Jeannie Parsons-Rhymer– I’ve been with the Children’s Council for about 10 and a half years. I started as an intern, but really fell in love with the mission of the agency, plus I love children, and in general, passionate about what I get to do and the people I get to work with, which is mostly the parents.

Hannah Mahala– I’m a little newer to the agency as I just began my journey here last fall. I was actually already familiar with Triple P as my last job was with AppHealthCare. I really love the connections that are made between Triple P and families, the support that’s visible, and how it positively, directly impacts those who really need it.

Both of those are solid answers. Now tell us–what does it take to be a hub provider?

Jeannie– I think embracing leadership for your agency is a really big deal. There are a lot of people on our team so being a team player, working one-on-one with others, and having that mindset while you’re also taking on leadership sets you on your own path towards who you become in the position for other people. Collaborating with others while you collect new data and compile reports, and spreading motivation for others interested is a big deal, too, because we want to be able to spread the word and mission of Triple P. We also plan events and connect with those who can benefit from it.

Hannah– One of our biggest strengths within the hub is that our providers are trained in, or already have the knowledge of strategically working with this area and the families around us. Adopting the mindset of what you know instinctively about this area is helpful in how to best help our families successfully.

Your support through Watauga County seems to have a real impact! Will you share more about The Children’s Council’s offerings and services?

Jeannie– Our main program that introduces a lot of our families to the agency is our Diaper Bank. We’re able to give out a certain amount of diapers a month along with resources in using them to those who are in need. We also give out baby wipes and formula when we have it on hand. Essentially about 300 families who live in Watauga County that have kids who use diapers (the only requirement for the program, which is unique to our agency) have been supported by this so far. It also really helps funnel families and parents into other programs. It serves as a gateway to everything else we offer here at The Children’s Council.

Is there a success story you’d like to share that you hold close to your heart?

Jeannie– Recently we’ve been supporting three Afghan families who’ve relocated to the area. They each have several children including infants. This is a really special experience for us because we’ve been able to connect with them and provide a lot of information about Triple P while serving families with unique circumstances and perspectives. The strategies and tips we’ve provided are diverse and we’ve been strategic and thoughtful about what could help most without disrespecting or disrupting the cultures they moved away from. We’ve been easing them into the progression of learning and adjustment. The only thing—we don’t have Triple P in their language so we’ve been using a translator.

Amazing. Now, what would you like to share with parents or guardians who may be on the fence about seeking parenting help?

Hannah– I have an almost 3 year-old myself and I’m honestly so glad I’m in this position with access to Triple P. I use the resources and parenting programs and I am not above it! I struggle with a lot of parenting things and these resources are something I would seek out in a heartbeat, regardless of whether I was here working with them day to day. It’s just so good to know that these resources exist.

Jeannie– I am a parent, too, and our saying here at The Children’s Council is “It takes a village!” to raise a child. Every child is different and we all need help whether we voice that or not. We just want everyone to know that we’re here for them! We want to be your encouragement and support in what you need. There’s no shame in asking for assistance or advice for the things you face on a daily basis. I use the same parenting tips and strategies, not only for my children and grandchildren, but even with my husband.

Wow, so it works on spouses, too! Too funny. Lastly, Tell us about any upcoming events you may have.

We have Buildfest coming up on April 2nd! It’s at Watauga High School, hosted by the Children’s Playhouse, but many different organizations will be there. All kinds of activities, Triple P will be there- lots of different activities for kids of all ages- FREE for all!
